"Blinker" is vape slang for a draw long enough to trip a device's automatic cutoff, so how long a blinker lasts depends entirely on the model in your hand. The word names an event, not a duration
My working life is spent deciding whether a phrase in a draft is a claim or a rumour wearing a claim's clothes. This one is a rumour with good posture.
A blinker is what happens when a battery's internal timer ends a draw and the indicator announces it. The word describes what the hardware did; searchers reach for it as though it described what they did.
The question I field most often in oral-health copy is a cousin of this one: is this a symptom or a search phrase? "How long is a blinker" is a search phrase. The thing underneath it is a specification, and specifications arrive attached to model numbers. Take the slang as a duration and you will find a number that is wrong for your hardware. Take it as an event and you go find the document describing it.
Five documents, three different numbers

Widen the sample and the spread grows. Resistance is part of why those numbers cannot be pooled. The XROS 3 ships with pods rated 0.6Ω and 1.0Ω; the XROS Nano's are 0.8Ω and 1.2Ω; the Kodo Pro is rated for 510 atomizers above 0.8Ω and runs an adjustable 1.8V to 4.2V, while the CCELL Palm Pro is fixed at 2.8, 3.2 or 3.6 volts. At a fixed voltage, halving the resistance doubles the power reaching the coil. Eight seconds on one device is not eight seconds of the same thing on another.
Until roughly 2023 I let writers publish "usually 8 to 10 seconds" with a hedge attached. I stopped because of what happens to hedges in transit. A range with a qualifier gets requoted without the qualifier — in a summary box, in an answer engine — and lands on the reader carrying a confidence it never earned. The rule on anything I sign now is a named model or no number at all.
Nothing regulates these settings into agreement. It publishes no puff-duration figure, and it explicitly excludes the consumables themselves and "the physiological effects of any consumables used with the devices."
What a flashing light means on your model

Now compare the XROS Nano, from the same line. There, low resistance and short circuit make all indicators flash five times, low voltage makes them flash three times, and the eight-second cutoff is signalled by the battery-level indicators "breath[ing] 3 times gradually" — the identical signal that model uses for high resistance and no load.
Three blinks means low battery on one and something else entirely on the other. Flash counts are not a shared language across brands, or even within one.
This is also why a flashing light does not mean your cartridge is empty. Neither manual lists "out of e-liquid" as a condition at all. A flash can report a cutoff, a low cell, a connection fault, a resistance the board rejects, or heat.
The mistake I own here predates both models. I once passed a line reading "the cutoff is a standard safety feature set at ten seconds," sourced to a retailer explainer I had filed as though it were a spec sheet. A reader sent a photograph of a manual that said eight. Geek Bar's own product page publishes the 650mAh cell, the 16.0mL e-liquid volume, both puff ratings and a charging time of "about an hour." It publishes no cutoff duration and no protection table. Every "8 to 10 seconds on a Geek Bar" figure I have traced leads back to a retailer or aggregator blog rather than the manufacturer.
Worth knowing: the FDA's authorized list stood at 48 e-cigarette products as of 28 August 2026, across five companies — Glas, JUUL Labs, Logic, NJOY and R.J. Reynolds Vapor. The agency is blunt: "These are the only e-cigarettes that may be lawfully sold in the United States," and authorization "does not mean these products are safe, nor are they 'FDA approved.'" Most disposables on a shop counter are not on that list, which means no US regulator has reviewed the spec sheet you are trying to read.
Protection is not a target
The dominant wrong answer treats the blink as a length to reach, a benchmark, a dare. The manuals refute it in their own words. "The device will stop working." Once the board cuts output, the coil is no longer heating, and the remainder of a long draw pulls room air across cooling metal. The cutoff is a ceiling, and there is nothing on the far side of it to win.
Read where the manufacturer files the event and the framing gets harder to defend. Vaporesso lists overtime in a table headed PROTECTIONS, alongside short circuit and over-discharge. Deliberately triggering it means asking a device to run its fault routine, repeatedly, on purpose.
The strongest argument against me is a fair one, and it deserves granting first. People want a number, and the numbers do cluster: eight and ten are the two figures I keep meeting, and someone told "roughly eight to ten seconds" is not badly misinformed. That much is true. What the estimate cannot survive is its second life. A range published as guidance gets received as a target, and the failure isn't a mismeasured second — it's a device specification restyled as a benchmark for how deeply to inhale nicotine aerosol. A number that would be harmless in a spec table becomes a scoreboard the moment it loses its model name.
How to find the number that applies to you
- Read the exact model and variant off the device or the box. Nano, Mini and standard versions of the same line carry different specifications.
- Download that model's manual from the manufacturer's site, usually filed under downloads or support.
- Open the protections or indicator section and match your light pattern to a listed condition.
- Check the charging specification — the XROS manuals give DC 5V/1A — and use the cable and charger supplied with the device, per FDA guidance.
- If no listed condition matches what your device is doing, treat it as a fault rather than a feature.
When to stop using a device
Stop when it runs hot, tastes or smells burnt, or keeps signalling after you have reseated the pod or cartridge and dried the contacts.
