How Many Cigarettes Are in a Geek Bar? What the Usual Number Was Built to Measure
No fixed number of cigarettes equals a Geek Bar. Geek Bar's US product page lists the Pulse 15000 at 16 mL of e-liquid at 5% nicotine, stated on that same page as 50 mg/mL, which multiplies out to roughly 800 mg of nicotine in a full device. Benowitz and Henningfield, writing in Tobacco Control, put most manufactured cigarettes at 10 to 15 mg of nicotine in the tobacco rod, so one full Pulse holds about as much nicotine as 53 to 80 cigarettes, or three to four packs, before anything is inhaled. What reaches a person is smaller and much less certain. Smokers absorb roughly 10% of the rod, about 1 to 2 mg per cigarette, and how much of the 800 mg a vaper takes in depends on the device, the power mode and the puff.
What a Geek Bar Pulse holds, according to the company that sells it
The spec sheet is short. Sixteen milliliters of liquid, 5% nicotine given as 50 mg/mL, up to 15,000 puffs in Regular mode and up to 7,500 in Pulse mode. Eight hundred milligrams is the whole tank, and every cigarette figure attached to this product is some transformation of that number.
Whether the tank contains what the box says has been tested. Robertson and colleagues, publishing in ACS Omega in 2025, analyzed 25 disposables from four popular brands with Geek Bar among them; 10 of the 25 measured significantly below their labeled nicotine concentration, and all four brands had multiple products under label. At Roswell Park, Leigh and colleagues (Addiction, 2025) measured US Elf Bars at 6.5 ± 0.5 mL of nicotine solution at 41.8 ± 2.3 mg/mL. That works out to about 270 mg of nicotine in a device whose label points to 13 mL at 50 mg/mL, or 650 mg.
Twenty-two years of proofreading, first court transcripts and now health copy, left me tagging every figure by what stands behind it. The 800 mg is asserted by the seller. The 270 mg was measured, by a named lab, on a named model, from devices bought on a stated date. Both kinds of number get written in the same confident voice anyway.
What a cigarette holds, and what a smoker actually gets from one
Three quantities exist for any nicotine product, and mixing them is where cigarette comparisons go wrong: what it holds, what a testing machine pulls out of it under a written standard, and what ends up in a person's blood. Only the third has anything to do with quitting.

The cigarette row is where the mismatch shows. A machine running the FTC protocol extracts 1.1 mg from a rod holding 10 to 15 mg, so roughly 7 to 11% of the cigarette's nicotine reaches the yield figure. A vape does far better with its tank: in the JUUL testing reviewed by Prochaska, Vogel and Benowitz in Tobacco Control, machine-generated aerosol carried between about 30% and 83% of the pod's nicotine, with one estimate at 68%.
That gap is the whole problem. Compare tank against tobacco rod and a Pulse comes out at 53 to 80 cigarettes. Apply those JUUL transfer rates to 800 mg instead and divide by the FTC yield of a cigarette, and the same device lands between about 220 and 600. That second figure is my arithmetic on borrowed rates, not a measurement of a Pulse. Both routes are sound; they capture different fractions of what each product holds.
Why a puff is not a unit of nicotine
Machine puffs for cigarettes and machine puffs for vapes are different physical events, written into different standards. ISO 3308 specifies a 35 mL bell-shaped puff lasting 2 seconds, taken once a minute. CORESTA Recommended Method 81, later adopted as ISO 20768, specifies a 55 mL square-profile puff lasting 3 seconds, taken twice a minute. More air, longer draw, double the frequency, different shape. The cigarette regimes were actually tested for vaping and set aside, partly because bell-shaped puffs failed to reliably trigger airflow-activated devices.
Geek Bar's own spec sheet shows this better than any standards document. The same 16 mL of liquid is rated at 15,000 puffs in Regular mode and 7,500 in Pulse mode. Same nicotine, half the puffs, because Pulse mode drives more power through the coil and takes a bigger scoop out of the tank each time. A puff is a variable serving size that the user controls with a button.
People do press it. Roberts and colleagues surveyed 267 US adolescents and young adults in 2025 and reported in Tobacco Control that 55.1% had a device with a boost or pulse function; among those, 27.9% used it "very often" or "always." Any per-puff figure online came from a machine that never pressed that button.
Where "one pod equals one pack" came from, and what it was measuring
JUUL Labs stated that a 5% pod holds approximately 40 mg of nicotine and is "approximately equivalent to about 1 pack of cigarettes," alongside a company estimate of roughly 200 puffs per pod. A JUUL pod holds 0.7 mL. That is the entire container the figure was written for.
The 2022 review by Prochaska, Vogel and Benowitz put that claim through the literature. Five independent studies found 39.3 to 48.3 mg of nicotine in the liquid. Six machine studies reported per-puff aerosol yields of 72, 83, 87, 114, 137 and 164 micrograms. Across 200 puffs, that comes to 14.4 to 32.8 mg per pod, which the authors converted to 13 to 30 cigarettes using the FTC figure of 1.1 mg for a Marlboro Red. A five-day switching study funded by JUUL landed at 18 cigarettes.
So the pack figure was a rough statement about a day's nicotine delivery from a small pod, and it survived into an era of 16 mL tanks. A Pulse holds about 23 JUUL pods' worth of liquid. Carry the equivalence across literally and you get 23 packs in your pocket, which is not what anyone means when they repeat it.
A smaller wording problem hides inside the same claim. JUUL's 5% is 59 mg/mL. Geek Bar's 5% is 50 mg/mL. Percentages run by weight and mg/mL by volume, so two products advertising the identical percentage are not carrying the identical concentration. When the FDA authorized the JUUL2 pods in August 2026 it described them as 18 mg/mL, "the equivalent of 1.5 to 1.6% nicotine concentration," writing both units because one does not stand in for the other.

At LMU Munich, Falarowski and colleagues ran a crossover trial in 18 occasionally smoking adults, published in Scientific Reports in 2025. Peak plasma nicotine from the two disposables reached 7.1 and 6.9 ng/mL, against 8.1 ng/mL for a cigarette and 3.1 ng/mL for a conventional pod device. The disposables produced the fastest rise in the first minute and peaked at 5 to 6 minutes, ahead of the cigarette's 8 minutes.
In Columbus, Keller-Hamilton and colleagues watched 96 young adults vape their own brand for 30 minutes and measured a mean plasma nicotine boost of 18.8 ng/mL, reported in Addiction. Over longer stretches, a Yale group led by Arun analyzed NHANES data from 2013 to 2020 and found serum cotinine in heavy exclusive vapers at 220 ± 38 ng/mL against 212 ± 6 ng/mL in cigarette smokers. That last paper is a medRxiv preprint from February 2025 and has not been peer reviewed, which is the kind of tag I would want printed next to it every time it gets quoted.
Set those against a dose that regulators have already calibrated. FDA-approved over-the-counter nicotine patch labeling starts a person who smokes more than 10 cigarettes a day at 21 mg delivered over 24 hours. In the one place where dosing had to be written down and defended, a pack-a-day habit is handled in tens of milligrams a day. The 800 mg in a Pulse is a supply rather than a dose, roughly 38 days of that patch schedule sitting in a plastic shell you can finish in a week. I ran that division twice on a wet afternoon with nothing moving outside, which is not where the question gets asked; it gets asked at a counter, phone in one hand, someone waiting, and only a round number fits in that gap.
How to turn your own use into a number a clinician can use
The American Dental Association's guidance asks clinicians to identify and document tobacco use for every patient at every visit, and the forms were built around a box that says cigarettes per day. If you vape, that box has nothing true to put in it. Here is what to write instead, and the arithmetic takes under a minute:
- Read the two printed figures off your device: the e-liquid volume in mL and the nicotine strength in mg/mL. On a Pulse 15000 that is 16 mL and 50 mg/mL.
- Multiply them for the total nicotine the device holds. Sixteen times 50 gives 800 mg.
- Count how many days one device lasts you. Be honest about it; use the last two devices, not your best week.
- Divide the total by the days. A device finished in five days is about 160 mg a day, by label.
That daily figure travels well, because nicotine replacement and taper plans are written in milligrams per day. Bring the device or a photo of its label. The question I get most often is whether something is a symptom or a search phrase, and my honest answer is that I can check what a label claims and who measured it, not what is happening in your mouth.
What no label on this device can settle
The FDA has authorized 48 e-cigarette products as of its August 28, 2026 announcement, and the agency states that the products on that list are the only e-cigarettes that may lawfully be marketed and sold in the United States. No Geek Bar appears on it. On December 5, 2024 the FDA announced warning letters to 115 retailers for selling unauthorized disposables, naming Geek Bar Pulse, Geek Bar Skyview and Geek Bar Platinum among them.
The consequence is narrow. No regulator has reviewed delivery data for the Pulse, because none was submitted and cleared. I searched the biomedical literature for a published machine-measured yield for a Geek Bar Pulse and found none; 28 records mention the brand, and the closest laboratory work, the ACS Omega study, characterized e-liquid rather than per-puff delivery. Add counterfeits, which circulate widely for a brand under this much enforcement pressure, and the label on the device in your hand carries a claim that nobody independent has checked. Your own milligrams per day survive that problem, because you count the days yourself.
